More Titles for Ma Lin and Guo Yue
China’s Ma Lin and Guo Yue won the respective Men’s and Women’s Singles titles at the Volkswagen Open China tournament which concluded in Nanjing on Sunday 1st May 2007.
All four finals were contested by players from the People’s Republic of China.
In the Men’s Singles final Ma Lin beat Wang Hao 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8, whilst at the same stage Guo Yue succeeded against Guo Yan 11-7, 11-6, 11-5, 14-12.
In the semi-finals Guo Yue had beaten Japan’s Saki Kanazawa, the one non Chinese player taking part on the final day, 11-8, 17-19, 11-5, 11-7, 11-6, whilst Guo Yan had overcame Liu Shiwen 9-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 12-10.
Meanwhile, at the semi-final stage of the Men’s Singles event, Wang Hao had defeated Wang Liqin 11-8, 11-9, 4-11, 15-17, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6 and Ma Lin had overcame Hao Shuai 4-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-3, 2-11, 11-6, 14-12.
It was Ma Lin’s second Men’s Singles title of the year on the ITTF Pro Tour and including Grand Finals, the seventeenth of his career; for Guo Yue it was her fourth Women’s Singles crown of the year on the ITTF Pro Tour and her ninth in all.
Meanwhile, there was further success for Guo Yue. She partnered Li Xiaoxia to victory in the Women’s Doubles final beating Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen 6-11, 11-3, 11-8, 3-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9 whilst in the Men’s Doubles gold medal contest Wang Hao partnered Chen Qi to success over Ma Lin and Wang Liqin; the margin of victory being 12-10, 13-11, 6-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7.
For Chen Qi and Wang Hao it was their second career Men’s Doubles victory as a pair on the ITTF Pro Tour, whilst for Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia it was their third Women’s Doubles triumph and their second in succession; the previous week they had won at the Volkswagen Open Japan in Chiba.
